About Art Trader Canada

Why do art collectors want to sell their art pieces?

Tastes change; trends change; your environment changes. Your home may need a new piece of art; your art may need a new home. Art Trader is Canada’s leading platform designed to connect art lovers interested in selling & purchasing previously owned artwork.

How does a private collector sell their art?

Private collectors have many reasons to sell art. Often pre-owned art becomes available when a collector’s taste changes, when the art increases in value, when art is inherited or gifted, when financial circumstances necessitate a sale, or when a family is downsizing & doesn’t have room for their entire art collection.

The reality is that the secondary art market is limited for the average art lover & difficult to navigate. Some galleries may agree to re-sell your art if they represent that particular artist or the original piece was purchased from their gallery. This often comes with fees to display the art & commission on the sale.

Auction houses are generally only interested in high-profile artists whose work commands signifcant attention & attracts high commissions. Donating or gifting your artwork is a nice option however you forfeit the value of the artwork & it can be difficult to find a legitimate partner who will accept donations & offer official tax receipts for the true value of the art. When a piece of art needs a new home, Art Trader helps to ensure that your fine art continues to be celebrated & cherished.

Art Trader connects art lovers by facilitating the selling & buying process. Art buyers can reach out to art sellers directly to negotiate a transaction. Art Trader is not directly involved in authentication, negotiation or sale of the artwork - we simply make the connection.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

PRICING YOUR ART

Josh & Justin

The idea for Art Trader materialized following a renovation of our family home, when we discovered that one of our pieces of art no longer fit the décor and was too large for our space. Rather than storing it in our basement, we decided to try to find a new home for our art. We reached out to the artist and gallery where it was originally purchased to see if there was any interest in reselling the piece. Surprisingly, this was not an option. We realized that many people may find themselves in similar situations and we were struck by how challenging it was to find a platform to sell pre-owned artwork. A discussion at the dinner table sparked the idea for Art Trader, a dedicated online marketplace designed to make it easier for art enthusiasts to buy and sell pre-owned art. Our parents challenged us to develop this concept and six months later, Art Trader was born.
