Pricing artwork is an important component of achieving a successful sale.
- Hire an Art Appraiser: Consider hiring an appraiser to determine the value of your artwork. Appraisers are trained specialists who work for a fee.
- Research: There are many websites that offer additional guidance, such as BidtoArt, is a premier source of information about the art market, with a comprehensive database of art auction pricing for art, antiques & collectibles.
- Contact the Artist: If possible, contact the artist to ask what the piece might be retailing for now. Ask if they have gallery representation & how to contact that gallery.
Packaging Costs
Once your artwork sells, packaging for shipping is your responsibility. Cost of packaging materials & any added costs should be factored into the final cost you negotiate with the buyer at the time of sale.
NOTE: For larger, oversized artwork that requires a wooden crate, you may have to get professional crating services, which can cost up to $500 or more depending on the size & fragility of the artwork. Always research packaging / crating costs carefully when negotiating the shipping cost with the buyer. Estimating your crating cost can be done by calling to receive quotes from local woodworkers. Courier companies such as UPS can generally assist with artwork packaging, materials & fees etc.
